Digital Converter Box Update

Update: See this post for further details about the DTVPal/Echostar TR-40.

A while ago, I detailed my thoughts about the available digital converter boxes in our area. After weighing the options, I decided on the Insignia NS-DXA1. It is a good unit, and I would recommend it to anyone with a coupon to redeem. For a closer look, you can read my review of the Insignia NS-DXA1.

But we still have one coupon left, so I thought I would see if the local options had changed at all.

Indoor HDTV Antennas

There is a lot of bad information out there being circulated about HDTV antennas. The biggest myth is that you need a special HDTV antenna to receive HDTV channels. This is absolutely untrue and any good antenna will work well for receiving HDTV. So the real question is: where can you find a good antenna?

A Week with the NS-DXA1

Earlier, I posted some of my thoughts about digital converter boxes.  There are only a few retailers in our area who will accept the converter box coupons, so the choices are limited to four units. I had already ruled out the RCA DTA800 and the Magnavox TB100MW9 for reasons detailed in my other post. This left the Insignia NS-DXA1 or the Zenith DTT900. Both are made by the same manufacturer and are said to be identical, so I felt that either one would be a good choice.

I chose the Insignia NS-DXA1, which is sold by Best Buy. Last week, I checked with the nearest store and they had plenty in stock. The final cost was $20 after using one of our converter box coupons. The cashier said that the boxes were flying off the shelves, but that they were having no problems keeping them in stock.

BBC World News

"BBC World News" is a fixture on PBS stations in the United States, and it has been for a number of years. WLIW-TV, the US distributor for the program, has chosen not to renew their contract with the BBC. The new distributor is KCET-TV from Los Angeles. Now WLIW-TV is preparing their own international new program with a working title of "Your World Tonight". It remains to be seen how many PBS stations will keep "BBC World News" and how many will pick up the new "Your World Tonight".

BBC Rebranding

According to this article in the Guardian, the BBC is engaged in a rebranding campaign for its news services. The changes involve new sets, a new logo (a red globe symbol), and new station identifications (often called "idents"). The domestic news channel, BBC News 24, is being renamed BBC News and the international news channel, BBC World, is being renamed BBC World International. The stated goal for these changes is to provide a more uniform look and structure for all of their news services. The revamp will cost £550,000.

Digital Converter Boxes

Back in February, I applied for coupons at the TV Converter Box Coupon Program website. Those coupons have arrived. In case you haven’t been paying attention, all TV stations in the United States are making the transition from analog to digital transmissions. The deadline is February 17, 2009, and after that date all stations (with the exception of some low-power stations) will switch to using digital transmissions only. Because older TV sets can’t receive digital signals, Congress established the converter box program. Every household is eligible to receive up to two $40 coupons for converter boxes to allow your analog televisions to receive digital channels.
